Brian King's Dreads

The Dreads

A Watercooler Wednesday post with a twist: this week’s post is not from me.

It’s written by my good friend Brian King. He has an awesome fundraiser he is doing to raise money for Invisible Children. I don’t want to steal his thunder, but I did want to say one thing:

Brian is one of the craziest kats I’ve ever met, and I totally 100% endorse this fundraiser.

Let’s bring hope to Uganda! (And embarrassment to godly brothers!)

~~

“Hi friends,

If you haven’t heard yet, I’m putting together an awesome event to raise money and awareness for Invisible Children. They were the first group to bring the sufferings of the Ugandan people to the American consciousness.

Since their beginning in 2003, Invisible Children has been working to free some of more than 30,000 children that have been captured by militia groups and forced into becoming soldiers.

Recently, the level of violence has been receding, but over 1.5 million people are still living in refugee camps. These camps are ridden with disease and malnutrition, but the refugees are virtually trapped because they lack the resources they need to return home. Invisible Children continues to help these people by providing schooling and other resources to enable them to return to their villages with their needs met and hope restored.

The Mission

The Mission

After hearing about these children, I have been looking for a way to help. This is what I came up with: in order to raise money for Invisible Children, I am going to auction off my dreadlocks on eBay!

“That’s crazy!” you might be saying, and I’d agree with you  But crazy or not, it’s true. I have been in contact with Invisible Children, and they have shared their enthusiasm about this novel fundraising method. So here’s how it’s going to work.

- I’m going to put up each of my dreads on eBay, so there will be 35 individual auctions. I’ll be starting the auction on Wednesday, July 16th.

- Then (here’s where you come in!!!) donors bid big money on eBay. Once I put the eBay posting up, I’ll send you the link.

- If you win a dread, congratulations! By adopting a lock, you can tell me what to do with it: dye it whatever color you want, send me beads/charms to put on it, … be creative.

Dye

The Dye

- On July 25th, I will be going up to Knotty Boy salon up in Vancouver, BC. I have told them about Adopt-a-Lock and they’re so excited about it that they’re going to dye all my dreads for free! They will dye each dread according to its winner’s choice.

- I will then keep my dreads all crazy-colored (1-3 weeks depending on how much is raised, see my blog for details), and then cut them off.

- I will donate 100% of the profits (only subtracting the eBay fees) to Invisible Children.

- Also, the company I’m interning with this summer will match the gift amount 100%. So $1 raised = $2 for Invisible Children.

- Finally, all the auction winners will be emailed an official Adopt-a-Lock adoption certificate including a picture of their adopted dread and a personal thanks by me! Kind of like adopting a star, but way cooler.

Come on, there are bazillions of stars and only 35 dreads! But similar to adopting a star, I’m not planning on actually sending my disembodied dreads to the winners. I’m betting that most people won’t actually want one in the first place. But that being said, if you really want your adopted dread, I will be happy to send it your way.

I think that sums up the Adopt-a-Lock campaign fairly well. For more details, please check out my Adopt-a-Lock blog.

~~

I am really stoked about this! As a recap, here’s what you can do to help,

1) Go to http://adoptalock.blogspot.com/ to find out when official auctioning begins on Wednesday June 16

2) Attempt to outbid my Cotton Candy Pink with Green Hair-Clips

3) Pray for the ministry of Invisible Children

D Gray Man Episode 86

In an earlier post, I talked about one of my favorite new animes, D-Gray Man. At the time I was on episode 44; this week they rolled out the latest, episode 86. After a dry stretch, I feel like it’s getting good again.

One hand for Akuma, one hand for people.” Allen Kun

To my horror, I discovered that Funimation, the distributors of D-Gray Man, are starting to spurt copyright issues that are bound to make it difficult, if not impossible, to stream it online (it’s already impossible to watch the latest episode on YouTube). So close to the end, and I fear I shall be forced to wait - as my friend Hilary already warned me - several months to 2 years for the official translations to make it to US DVD. Grrrr…

In case you got the YouTube ban, you can check it out (temporarily?) at Veoh. Until I am asked to take it down, you can watch it here,

Sigur Rós Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust Debut

Sigur Ros Album Cover                                             -Sigur Rós Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust Album Cover

One of my favorite bands of all time, the Icelantic group Sigur Rós, is releasing a new album worldwide on June 23rd. And believe me, the world just said, “YAY!!

The world may be saying, “YAY!” but I am uncertain. What do you do when someone you really love decides to go A-wall?

I made this post late Saturday night at a café here in Seattle, feeling good about my support, and then Sunday afternoon before church I decided to hop online and check out the music video for the new song…after watching about 30 seconds of it, ”oh shit,” is the first thing that entered my mind.

I had left an objectionable post linger on my site for 24 hours without any disclaimers. If you watched the music video and were offended by the graphic nudity, I offer my sincere apologies. It is another reminder that my life suffers in the details.

And now I am left with a moral dilemma that I pass to you. I will continue with the original post, and leave the band’s newest creative endeavor to your discretion. I still think they are amazing, though I am left with mixed feelings to be sure.

… … …

The Original Post

Click here to get a free download of Gobbledigook, the first track available off the new album. You can also see a Quicktime video of the song at the same site (WARNING! Video contains graphic nudity).

I was first introduced to Sigur Rós while living in Minneapolis. My roommate got me interested in the band with their album Takk. If you are not familiar with them, I advise that you get familiar, and fast, because you are missing out on one of the best bands of our time, even if we don’t understand what the heck they are saying.

Yes, they sing in Icelantic, and not even my 3 years of studying and living in Norway helps me crack that linguistic puzzlement that is the Icelantic language. But believe me, 10 minutes into the music and you won’t even care. Plus, the lead singer plays the electric guitar with a violin bow.

If you need reasons, here is another:

You know how I-Tunes keeps track of the Top 25 Most Played songs in your playlist? Care to guess how many of those 25 (out of my 1,768 songs) are Sigur Rós?

All 25.

Forgive the album cover nudity, and check out this band!

(by the way, I just read that the lead singer, Jón “Jónsi” Thor Birgisson, will be singing a song in English, which to the best of my knowledge is the first time he has done this on album)

Iron Man, Flight, and a killer deck of Card’s

Bumbling around YouTube today I ran into this interesting video about the feasibility of Iron Man-like flight. I’m really crossing my fingers for this company..

Which would you rather have?

1) An Iron Man-like rocket pack

2) A space shuttle

Why?

……………..

And have you read any of the Orson Scott Card Ultimate Iron Man comics? They are amazing!

Just because I love you, here’s a link to an interview with Mr. Card himself. Don’t say I never did nothing for you..

http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6553797.html

(My favorite part of the interview is when Mr. Card admits that he did not like comics, and that he did not like Iron Man before writing it. I also was not a fan of the Iron Man universe before reading Mr. Card’s wonderful remake. The combination of Robert Downey Jr.’s acting, and Orson Scott Card’s remake, has got me very excited about the movie, so if you’ve seen it, don’t ruin it!)

Coldplay single - Violet Hill

It’s been almost 3 years since X&Y, and all I can say is, it’s about freakin’ time Coldplay!!

The band is debuting their new album with a special offer to their fans. Make sure to wander over to the band’s website at 12:15pm (UK time) for a free song download!

http://www.coldplay.com/index.html

(for us Seattleites that would be Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 4:15:00 AM, but who’s counting?)

The album, Viva La Vida, is packing 10 new songs and, in the words of the band,

the powers that be tell me it’ll be available for general consumption on June 16/17, depending on where you live.”

Of course, not everyone is as excited as me about the new album. The NY Times gave it a blistering review, “10 Reasons to Avoid the New Coldplay CD.”

http://www.antimusic.com/news/08/april/1410_Reasons_To_Avoid_The_New_Coldplay_CD.shtml

My personal favorite was from Pitchfork, describing Coldplay as,

“the self-described “very heavy soft rock” troupe you know and your mom loves…”

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/49891-coldplay-reveal-iviva-la-vidai-tracklist

Despite negative press, I am excited for the new album. Coldplay may not be my favorite band, but they are chill enough for a good writing atmosphere, upbeat enough to keep me awake (I don’t agree with the critics’ snoring complaints), and also great for road trips (X&Y still conjures great memories of a cross-country trip in Norway, summer ‘05, Coldplay on the player and a car full of friends).
