I suppose this comment is a little late, and you may in fact consider this bad news, but the deal with the lack of a satisfying ending is that it's book one of a trilogy. The second book, Deeper, has gotten negative reviews from many of those who positively reviewed the descent. I haven't read it yet. Many of the complaints center around the interesting concepts in the first book that are never really explored in the second book, and it sounds like most reviewers are unaware of the upcoming third book. I have some hope that the final installment might finally uncover some of the real questions/explore the possibilities in Long's constructed world. And maybe he'll even give it a decent ending. ;-)
